ALL Facts

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a cancer of the bone marrow and blood that progresses rapidly without treatment. That's why it's important to start treatment soon after diagnosis.
Most children with ALL are cured of their disease after treatment. The numbers of adults and their remission lengths have grown significantly over the past 30 years.
ALL is also called acute lymphocytic leukemia and acute lymphoid leukemia.

  • ALL is the most common type of cancer in children from 1 to 7 years old.
  • ALL is the most common type of leukemia in children from infancy up to age 19.
  • ALL affects the blood cells and immune system.
  • There are several ALL subtypes.
  • The type of treatment you receive and your treatment outcome depend on your ALL subtype and individual risk factors.

Jethenro is considered High Risk because of his age and progression of disease at diagnosis.
He had 94% blast cells at diagnosis
He is considered an Early Responder, therefore his
 Phase Protocol includes:

1.Induction~Completed 7/7/11
Goal: Bring disease into total remission with special attention to spinal chord protection...
Remission  achieved by day 29~0% blasts

2.Consolidation~Completed 10/11/11
Goal:Destroy undetected cancer cells throughout entire body
After qualifying delays and in hospital twice for viral and bacterial infections

3.Interim Maintenance w/ High Dose Methotrexate~Completed 12/21/11
Goal:Continue to destroy undetected cancer cells~lowers possibility of relapse of disease
After 2 delays. One for low defenses, One to take ACT test and attend sisters graduation.

4.Delayed Intensification~Completed 2/29/12
Goal: A variation of Induction and Consolidation~lowers possibility of relapse of disease
ONC team omitted last scheduledVCR as hospital visit turned into 3 weeks~and  VCR is part of LTM.  Fevers lasted for 1 month due to shut down immune system.  Bone Marrow took more than 21 days to recover.

5.Long Term Maintenance
Goal: To destroy any lingering diseased cells that could collect and regenerate causing relapse.
Began April 3, 2012.

Each phase lasts 30-60 days~ if there are no complications.
Long Term Maintenance will last until October, 2014
